Off to See the Fireflies

Getting There
From Kuala Lumpur Eddie and I took bus 100 to Kuala Selagnor Bus Terminal which was about an hour ride costing 6 Ringgit each. The town itself is super laid back and quiet right where the Selagnor River opens up into Strait of Malacca.

Where to Stay
Having time to kill before checkin we went to frolic in the forest of Taman Alam Kuala Selangor Nature Park where we discovered you can book cute A Frames for just 30 Ringgit a night! This included 2 twin beds, a fan, and a shared restroom. Thankfully our original booking had free cancellation because camping in an ecopark sounded way cooler than a classic hotel room which would have been 40 Ringgit.

What To Do
Taman Alam Kuala Selagnor Nature Park
This lovely Ecopark has a 3 km trail that loops around taking you through 3 different habitats; forest, wetlands, and mangrove habitat. You'll find crab eating monkeys but beware they are aggressive 2 gained up and tried to attack me when I was walking by them, could have been the banana skirt I was wearing but either way it is scary. There are 2 watchtowers and a couple of resting huts as well.

Kampung Kuantan Fireflies
We attended the Firefly Patk where you get a 4 person wooden boat for 50 Ringgit that is manually rowed by your boatsman do 1 km. The park opens at 7pm but I suggest going after 8pm. There are 1000s of fireflies making the trees look like they’re lit buy my Christmas lights. The moon was 97% full making me imagine how impressive they are when there is no moon if they were already this breathtaking. Well worth your time! Our Grab there was 17 Ringgit but we were unable to find one back, luckily we found a ride. If you don’t find a ride you’ll have to take a taxi back. You can maybe ask if your Grab driver will wait since it doesn’t take all that long. The fireflies numbers are dwendling due to a loss of habitat. The mangrove trees are important for their survival. Be kind and respectful.

Fresh Seafood
If you’re a seafood lover Kuala Selangor is known for the fresh seafood. There are several places to get some. We tried Jeti but it was nothing special. The view was incredible and relaxing though.

Getting Back
You just go to the same bus terminal you arrived in and catch bus 100 back costing 6 Ringgit a piece.
Recommendation

  • Don’t wear clothes with food on them
  • See the fireflies
  • Stay at Taman Alam Eco Kuala Selangor Nature Park
  • Ask if your Grab driver will wait for you
  • Eat fresh seafood

Our environment is important. In the past we haven’t done the best at taking care of it but now it is our job to step up and fix what has been done. Don’t litter, support nature parks, don’t feed the wildlife, share your experiences out in nature, cut out single use plastics, and respect our Mather Earth. She’s the only one we got!
Enjoy the beauty around you,
